The Flip Ultra was the first small video camera. The Flip Ultra HD is the upgraded version of the original and is better in numerous ways and it is the best selling pocket camcorder for good reason
First of all, for a small video camera, it has a 2.0 inch LCD screen which is noticeable upgrade over the 1.5 inch screen and the display is much sharper. It also has an HDMI jack that allows you to connect to your HDTV but it doesn’t come with an HDMI cable.
The Flip Ultra HD comes with a pair of rechargeable AA batteries that charge when the camera is plugged into a USB port. However it takes seven hours to fully charge the batteries. With 8GB of memory storage it gives you about two hours of HD recording.
It still has a retractable USB arm that makes it hard to maneuver around a USB port. The controls on the back for record, play and trash have been enlarged so they are easier to use.
The Flip Ultra HD only records in high definition unlike the Vado HD or the Kodak Zi8 which can record either in HD or in lower resolution. At 720p the quality of the video pictures is very good. In fact the picture quality and sound quality is the best of all the pocket camcorders.

The best value for your money for a small video camera is the Vado HD. This camcorder has a the same 2.0 inch LCD screen as the Flip Ultra HD which is a vast improvement. Also the Vado HD has a mini HDMI cable included offering 720p output to an HDTV.
The Vado HD has 8GB of memory that gives you about 2 hours of recording at the highest quality. The HD quality is very good and gives images that are clearer and smoother and the HD mode is better for handling motion and different light levels. It can also record at lower resolution for faster uploading.
The Vado HD still only has a 2X digital zoom which really isn’t sufficient. The USB arm is situated on the bottom and has a flexible cord that makes it easier to connect to a USB input. The Flip Ultra HD has a spring-loaded retractable USB arm that makes it hard to maneuver around a crowded USB hub.
The dimensions of the Vado HD are 3.9 x 2.2 x 0.6 HWD and it weighs 3.5 ounces. It comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery.

The other best selling small video camera is the Kodak Zi8. It offers a larger 2.5 inch LCD screen that makes it much easier for finding your subject.
The Kodak Zi8 also offers still images at 5.3 mega pixels. The quality of the video is just good with a full 1080p HD capture giving good picture quality. It also comes with a 4x digital zoom whereas the other two only had 2x zooms.
It also has built-in face recognition and electronic image stabilization which work very well.
It has only 128 MB of on-board memory but with the low price of SD cards you can expand the memory up to 32GB. It comes with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery that gives about one hour and thirty minutes of recording time. It also comes with an HDMI cable so you can hook it up to an HDTV to play back your videos or your still pictures.
The dimensions are 3.2 x 2.4 x 1.2 HWD and it weighs 3.8 ounces.
